Blog 12 - Sugar Mill

I have made an exciting discovery today, I found out that the remote triggers that we use in the studio also work with my camera. (the studio use Nikon cameras and i have a Canon so i did not think it would fit) A remote trigger sets of your flash when you push the shutter button, a transmitter goes in your hot shoe on your camera and the receiver goes on the bottom of your flash. This can then be attached to a tripod so you can position your flash away from your camera and have more control over the light. The 7D does have a built in inferred system but you have to have a line of site to the flash which is limiting, the triggers work on radio waves so you can be much further away and also hide the flash away some where.

I was asked last minuet today to do a 4pm wedding which i was more then happy to do as it meant i could play with my new toys. It got even better as the wedding was in the sugar mill and during the ceremony it was cloudy so the ambient light would be really soft. I set the flash up with the remote triggers and i put it on a tripod with an umbrella to soften the flash and then i put it about 8 foot in the air pointing down to the alter.

When you shoot a wedding dress with an on camera flash there is a real danger that you can wash out the dress and loss the detail. If you move your light source away from you camera it means when you move to the sides you get slight shadows where the folders are and the details in the fabric really can stand out. I love shooting in the sugar mill as its a very even light but then being able to add in this control with a flash has been an eye opener. I am very pleased with the results and i hope the couple will be to.

Congratulations to James and Maura you have been very patient with me today and you came in with some of your own ideas which i loved. It was a real pleasure working with you.
