Blog 13 - Soft Light on the Beach

Since i got here i have never been able to shoot in the sugar mill and now i have had 3 weddings in there in a little less than 2 weeks.

On my last wedding on Tuesday i had been using an umbrella on my off camera flash, something i did not mention on that last post was that while i was on the beach the wind caught it and knocked it over to my horror. (I think that is the first time that flash gun has been dropped since it was new) Trying to act all cool about it i picked it up, took of the now bent umbrella and put it in my bag and continued. I fired off a few shots and went to review it and the difference was unbelievable, i had gone from really nice skin tones to hash shadows in a drop of a flash. I went straight back to my back unbent the umbrella and stuck it back on the stand.

This then got me thinking, there must be a way of softening the light a little without using an umbrella! I went to the lab with some cardboard and now a space piece of white cloth and started putting together my own mini soft box that could fit over the front of my speedlite so that when i was out on the beach i would not need to worry about it blowing over. (I aware that this is not a new idea to put defusers over flash guns and there are allot out there but Barbados can be quite expensive due to import taxes)

While i was out shooting my wedding today it was perfect, i did still keep my eye on it but after a short while i was more then happy that it was not going to get knocked over. It also gave me some stunning results.

My SpeedLite hard at work this afternoon
Well done to David and Alison, it was allot of fun working with you and i don't think i will forget the slap Alison gave David in the face to get a mosquito for some time to come! Very funny!
